Yisrael-Israel-יִשְׂרָאֵל
In the chumash (Genesis 32:22–32), Israel is the second name given to Jacob after his wrestles with one of God's angels. In the story Jacob is crossing a river and sends his family and sheep across first and is left alone to spend the night on the other bank of the river. There he physically wrestles with an unnamed “man” (some kind of angel) all night and… survives. In the morning, Jacob asks the man for a blessing. In reply, the man asks for his name and tells Jacob: "from now on your name is not Jacob but Israel, for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed" ("ki sarita im elokim va’anishim vatuchal"). We, who struggle to find meaning in this world and in the texts we have inherited from our ancestors, have earned the name "Yisrael". Original Torah calligraphy for CSP by soferet Jen Taylor Friedman (www.hasoferet.com).
