In Judeo-Spanish, Yiddish-speaking Jews became known by a variety of other playful nicknames that symbolized their often-marginal status in Ottoman Salonika. In addition to the term "Rusos" (Russians), they were also called mashemehas (derived, according to a folk etymology, from an apocryphal story about Jews from eastern Europe who arrived at the port of Salonica and went around asking in Hebrew, Ma shemekha? (What is your name?)), "los Yiddishim", "Ziggizookes" (from Yiddish "zay gezunt" (stay well, good bye)), and "vuzvuzim" (meaning “what-whaters,” from vus? vus? (what? what?), said by the uncomprehending Ashkenazi seeking to speak with a Sephardi). Much thanks to Dr. Devin Naar for his work on Ladino and Ottomon Jewish history!
