Jewish magical creatures organic denim tote bag- "The Lion and the Unicorn"

Regular price $35.00 USD
Regular price Sale price $35.00 USD
From the ceiling of the synagogue of Hodorov, Ruthenia (Reissen), present-day Ukraine, built 1642, painted 1651, restored 1714 by Yisrael b. Mordechai Lizhintsky of Yaritchov, destroyed during the Holocaust. The lion and the unicorn represent the struggle between Israel (the unicorn, “who is like Israel, a singular nation on earth?”-liturgy) and the nations of the world (the lion—“save your nation from the mouth of the lion”-Sabbath table hymn), or, perhaps, the internal struggle between the qualities of Judah (lion) and those of Joseph (unicorn). See Epstein, Dreams of Subversion in Medieval Jewish Art and Literature (Penn State University Press, 1997), 31ff. This T-shirt was designed for CSP by Prof. Marc Michael Epstein (a creative T-shirt artist and accomplished exegete who is also a beloved CSP teacher).
