From the ceiling of the synagogue of Hodorov, Ruthenia (Reissen), present-day Ukraine, built 1642, painted 1651, restored 1714 by Yisrael b. The lion and the unicorn represent the struggle between Israel (the unicorn, “who is like Israel, a singular nation on earth?”-liturgy) and the nations of the world (the lion—“save your nation from the mouth of the lion”-Sabbath table hymn), or, perhaps, the internal struggle between the qualities of Judah (lion) and those of Joseph (unicorn).
